about

A fabulous, previously unreleased live set recorded during a late 1983 European tour by Sun Ra and His Arkestra. The exact date and venue are unknown, although Paris has been identified as the city.

In the 1980s Ra sustained a rigorous US and overseas performance schedule. Audiences were growing, especially in Europe, and shows were becoming more extravagant and theatrical.

During this period, the Arkestra's repertoire began to feature Ra originals mixed with a greater proportion of Tin Pan Alley standards. These vintage titles held great significance to Sunny; they were popular when he was growing up and making his initial forays into composing and arranging. These famous tunes served as the building blocks for young Herman "Sunny" Blount in the 1930s and '40s, and decades later they became recurring entries on set-lists.

Based on other Arkestra gigs in Europe around this time, the personnel likely consisted of:

Sun Ra: piano, keyboard, vocals
June Tyson: vocals
Marshall Allen: kora, flute, alto sax, percussion
John Gilmore: tenor sax, clarinet, timb, vocals
Eloe Omoe: contra-alto clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, percussion
Danny Ray Thompson: baritone sax, flute, percussion
James Jacson: bassoon, Infinity-drums, flute
Ronnie Brown: trumpet, flugelhorn
Kwame Hadi: trumpet
Tyrone Hill: trombone
James Glass: electric guitar
Rollo Radford: electric bass
Clifford Jarvis: drums
Marvin “Boogaloo” Smith: drums
Chris Henderson: drums
Atakatune: conga
